What is osteopathy?
Osteopathic medicine was developed by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. Dr. Still was dissatisfied with the effectiveness of conventional 19th century medicine. He believed that many of the medications of his time were useless or even harmful. Dr. Still was one of the first of his time to study the attributes of good health in order to better understand the disease process.
In response, Dr. Still founded a philosophy of medicine based on ideas dating back to Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. The philosophy is based on the anatomy of the body and the close relationship between the function of the organs and their structure. Still identified the importance of the different systems of the body and how their condition is related to health. He emphasized the body's ability to heal itself and highlighted preventive medicine as essential to avoid the development of pathologies.
Dr. Still pioneered the concept of wellness more than 100 years ago. Currently, osteopathy is used as a treatment for musculoskeletal problems or in conjunction with medical treatments to treat certain pathologies, always seeking the general well-being of patients.
osteopathic treatment
For the “Latin American Academy of Osteopathy” osteopathic treatment is a treatment methodology that involves the use of different manual techniques in different systems of our body with the aim of preparing our body to promote self-healing.
Among the most important techniques of Osteopathic treatment are cranial techniques that are commonly used for some pathologies of the central nervous system, vertigo, headaches, bruxism, anxiety disorders, among others; The visceral techniques are focused mainly on improving the internal functioning of the organs and how they relate to the different tissues that surround them and finally there are the myofascial techniques that with them we seek to normalize dysfunctions of this extensive tissue that connects organs, muscles, bones and nervous system, in addition to being a very important support for the lymphatic system.
